CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

"What if Lucy's big huge red head appears again?" Nathan asks me as I set us down upon the black cracked surface of hell.

"You mean Lucy's head? I think she'd be crazy to appear now that she knows I'll probably slice and dice her with the hellknife. Besides, I'm pretty sure she's busy licking her facial wounds right about now."

I've set us down directly in front of the impossibly large and looming castle of hell. I make my way to the enormous black front wall of the edifice and touch my hand to the cold, dark surface.

"Uh, oh," I mumble. "I think we might have a problem."

"When Bubbles told me about this building, I thought she was exaggerating." Nathan is craning his neck back to look up along the face of the gothic castle structure.

"She wasn't exaggerating, and she's also needed."

Nathan looks down at me as I slump depressedly into the wall. "She's the one who opened the doors before, right?"

I know that he's been told everything about what's happened to me, still, it's weird to talk to him about it. I'm not the one who told him; my parents, Bubbles and Derek spilled to Nathan while I slept.

I nod in answer to his question. "She opened them because she's the devil, and I'm pretty sure the devil can do whatever she wants down here."

"I beg your pardon?"

If it's possible, Nathan's face has gone whiter than the vampiric pallor he normally has.

"Yeah, Michael told me Bubbles is the real devil, not Lucy."

Nathan lets out an exasperated breath. "Why didn't Bubbles tell anyone she's the devil?"

"I don't know, but it's probably going to be the first question I ask her if we ever get out of here."

"If we get out of here?" Nathan balks. "I thought you said you knew—"

Thubudubba.

A fart thumps in the distance, which can only mean one thing.

"Thunderbug?" I squint into the orange gloom of the underworld. "Is that you, pup?" The only answer I get to my questions are more fart noises, such as parp and ptthssssstt. Moving away from the black castle I follow the flatulence noises. Nathan creeps beside me. An orange fog has rolled in and I can't see five feet in front of my face.

Suddenly there's a loud yelp! and Nathan tumbles to the ground.

I look down and sure enough I find Thunderbug lying there on his side. "Oh no!" I cry out. "What happened to you, little puggy-wuggy." The poor thing has a gaping hole in his chest and it looks like the poor doggy got it from something that burned right through him.

"Thunderbug?" Cradling the pug in my arms, I notice his normally bulging eyes are closed. His little chest is vibrating he's breathing so fast. What's astonishing is that he's breathing at all. There's no blood, but I can see straight through the burnt out hole in his chest, all the way to the ground.

"Is he all right?" Nathan says as we both walk back toward the black castle.

"Well, he's alive, even though I don't know how.
